Ford’s newest iteration of the Mustang is, without a doubt, one of the finest ever made but its Shelby GT500 version is also one of the craziest ever.

After an initial report from the Blue Oval that was rather ambiguous, they’ve now officially announced the exact figures to be concerned with here.

Surprise surprise, the ones that were originally spoken off aren’t the ones we see now. This isn’t something that hasn’t happened before but there’s another surprise.

The original 650 horses aren’t there but instead, the GT500 Shelby is rated at 662 ponies. They come with a pretty impressive 631 lb-ft of torque.

Never mind the competition, Chevrolet’s Camaro ZL1 is about 70 behind on each of those numbers and it uses an even bigger engine.

Speaking of which, the 2012 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 uses a new 5.8 liter supercharged aluminium V8 powerplant. Despite developing all the performance in the world, the engine is exempt from the gas guzzler tax.

Sounds amazing, mostly because it is, but don’t think all these figures were just randomly blurted out by Ford and that we’re to just take them for granted.

The official figures on the GT500 were SAE-certified and that brought along another feather in the muscle car’s cap.

Officially, Ford now makes the most powerful V8 engine currently in production. Track oriented performance is also great thanks to SVT’s expertise in the matter but there is a bit of a problem with it.

The 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will start at $54.995 which is not exactly pony car cheap. Then again, this is by far the cheapest car that will do 200 mph.
