Without any intention of being bashful, I think USA has an alarming number of old laws that are just obsolete. One of these laws says that the headlights just HAVE to be able to switch between high and low beam, otherwise they are illegal.
And this law makes the Audi A8 illegal on their roads thanks to their innovating matrix beam lights. This technology uses LED clusters that switch on and off or even dim according to the situation ahead.
It is a good system that, in theory, will improve driving safety. Not only does it give the driver less things to worry about, but it is also a quicker response to the situations. Yet the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) is skeptic on changing the 45 year old law and they say that cars using LED stop lights are more likely to get rear-ended.
And while the US might or might not get to experience the Audi A8’s matrix beam lights, Europe is a sure market and I hope to prove this technology right.
