There is no surprise that Audi prepares a plug-in hybrid variant of the current A3 model but today we get the information that the new model might be unveiled at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show.

Current rumors say that it will be based on the current A3 Sportback, a quite logic move considering that the hybrid powertrain requires extra space. Under the hood we could find a 2.0-liter petrol engine along an electric motor for a total output of 237 horsepower.

The 8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack will provide a driving range of 50 kilometers in full electric mode. The new Audi A3 plug-in hybrid should also return impressive fuel economy figures of just 2 liters/100km, about 117mpg US.

The German hybrid model could cost somewhere around 35,000, a quite steep pricing tag if you compare it to the standard variant.

It remains to be seen if Audi will make the move and present the new A3 at Geneva.
