Some say that the airbags kill more people than they save. And although an airbag deployment without the person strapped in the seat could result in serious injury, most of the times they do their job.
It certainly beats bashing your head on the steering wheel or dashboard. And even for lateral impact, airbags have been developed to keep your head from slamming through the side window.

Chevrolet says they can do one better, and via a cool video presentation, they show us a world first for the car making industry: a center airbag. With this last addition you now have cushioning on all sides. So far this airbag has only been presented for the driver’s seat, making that the safest place in case of a crash.
It is an intriguing piece of technology, but being brand new, I have to be a bit skeptic. I am not sure what kind of tests they have done, but until enough vehicles out there will sport it for a sufficient feedback, I am not sold.
