BMW, together with the NHTSA have a rather sad announcement for the owners of the hottest versions of the Mini available on the market.

The Mini’s hot versions, the Cooper S and the JCW tuned one will be making an unforeseen visit to the dealers for a recall involving their water pumps.

This recall has its origins in an investigation the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration started in October of last year.

Back then, there was a bit of a suspicion as to how the fires in 12 Mini vehicles may have been linked since, in one way or another, they had the same engine.

The turbocharged powerplants are faced with the following issue: “the electronic auxiliary water pump that cools the turbocharger has an electronic circuit board that can malfunction and overheat”.

As a result, the recently announced recall will see no less than 88.911 will have to go in for a check up in order to make sure there’s no risk of a smoldering wreckage.

All of the above mentioned vehicles have been built between November 2006 and January 2011 so the time span is relatively large and so is the vehicle types.

Most of the affected vehicles are Mini Cooper S and the JCW but there’s also quite the stock of Mini Clubman S that suffer from the same problem.

Owners of any of the affected models should get in touch with their local dealer as they will be receiving a new fuel pump, plus the fitting done for free at any Mini/BMW dealer nearby.
