With the new P1 well underway, McLaren is working on its image, and a recent piece of information shows what they are planning.

A photo was found on a Chinese website claiming a 6:33.26 lap time on the Nürburgring.

When confronted with this, McLaren declared that the picture was not official, but instead was part of an inspirational panel built for the design team working on the P1. They also stated their engineers are already working on a way their car will be able to lap the Nürburgring in under seven minutes.

A vehicle like the McLaren P1 is not the same as a mass production one, with a successor for it not planned for at least 10 years. So for this decade the P1 will have to represent the car maker. That’s why the image is so important for this vehicle. It’s not enough to be powerful, there are plenty powerful cars out there, but a feat like a sub-seven Nürburgring lap will create the appeal expected from a McLaren.
