The Germans from Opel announced their intentions to compete with six fully-electric Ampera cars at the 2012 Rally Monte Carlo. The automotive event starts on March 22 in Annecy-le-Vieux and will have the finish line at Monte Carlo.
Opel will compete against other 150 eco-friendly cars in the “Alternative Energy” category of the Monte Carlo Rally.
The Ampera uses an electric motor delivering 150 horses and 370 Nm of torque for a 0 – 100 km/h acceleration in 9 seconds and a top speed of 161 km/h.
“For the first time in its history, Opel is providing its award-winning electric cars for the prestigious international Rally Monte Carlo,” says the car maker.
In order to be eligible for this category of the competition, all the vehicles must emit less than 115 g/km of CO2.
“The main aim of the rally is to cover a certain distance, maintain a constant speed and use as little energy as possible,” explains the company.
The Opel Ampera will compete against serious rivals such as the Tesla Roadster which won the last editions of the race.
