Tesla is a very special kind of car maker. It is one of the few that still controls most of its shares, and one that is in a continuous struggle to control the whole process involved.
They are already pushing hard to maintain their way of selling directly to the customer, without using traditional car dealerships.
Now, it seems they are pushing to control even more of the manufacturing process, a first step being the construction of their very own battery pack factory. They are willing to go as far as even opening their very own graphite mines, thus cutting cost of import and managing to closely control the whole process.
These mines will be opened in Canada and US, and complete with the 10 million square feet factory, it will go over a $5.000.000.000 investment distributed over the next 6 years. Apart from graphite, Tesla also plans to mine the needed cobalt locally, again cutting on import prices.
