The Germans from Volkswagen unveiled a new concept model, this time based on the Up! The VW Twin-Up Concept is an eco-friendly hybrid model which could enter series production in the coming years.

Under the tiny hood sits a 0.8-liter diesel engine producing 47 horsepower and 119Nm of torque. An electric motor outputting the same amount of power helps the model to offer a zero-emission driving range of 50 kilometers at speeds up to 125 km/h.

The Volkswagen Twin-Up needs 8,8 seconds to hit 100 km/h from standstill while the top speed is limited at 140 km/h. A dual-clutch seven-speed gearbox is used to send the power to the wheels.

Fuel economy figures are rated at 1,1 liters/100 km or 257mpg UK with CO2 emissions of just 27 g/km. The German concept weighs only 1,205 kilograms and benefits from an 8.6 kWh lithium-ion battery.

The company picked the Tokyo Motor Show to display the all-new Twin-Up concept.
