The Swedish at Volvo are very popular and well known for their efforts on the safety of cars and the practical thinking behind their designs.
More recently we’ve seen them take quite the bit of time with alternative power sources and developed quite a lot of hybrid or electrically powered vehicles.
At the core of the equation we find the Volvo C30 EV, a model which the Swedes are happy to announce of how it’s constantly being updated.
With a lot of minute changes and various minimal touches here and there to announce, Volvo have decided to focus on one particularly relevant aspect.
The company made a significant change to the battery pack of the Volvo C30 EV. It didn’t get any bigger, it didn’t get any more power and it didn’t get any quick charging kits either.
Despite this, Volvo tells us they’ve managed to considerably increase the range their good looking hatchback can travel in electric form.
This was achieved thanks to a new system that takes care of the battery in cold weather driving conditions. Los Angeles EV buyers may not get the point but the rest of the world, where snow exist, do.
The cold weather severely kills off battery range for a variety of chemical reasons and such. Some of you might now them but I’m not very interested.
Volvo’s solution is simple, add a climate control system that keeps the battery as close as possible to ideal conditions.
The system comes on when the temperature drops below -15° C or on a schedule.
As a final bonus in the climate control range is that the interior can be heated using a different fuel system instead of draining the batteries.
