The model was previewed last year at the 2016 Paris Motor Show as the LIV-2 Concept, now becoming what you can see in the short media gallery below.

What is quite revolutionary about it is that it is built on the so-called “Quad-Frame” body structure, making use of 1.5 Gpa giga-steel. It means that the structure provides “greatly improved body strength while reducing weight.”

Besides the strong and durable body structure, the all-new 2018 SsangYong Rexton is also big. So big that it measures 4,850 mm long, 1,920 mm wide and 1,800 mm high, coming as well with a 2,865 mm wheelbase, making it the biggest SUV so far.

Visually, the new Rexton SUV from SsangYong looks more domestic, revealing an evolutionary design, and highlighted by the neatly bolstered wheel arches, updated and more aggressive front grille with new headlights, and so on.

Inside, the cabin of the new SUV looks extremely high-end and luxurious with the brown leather all around, adding as well the latest high-end gadgetries. We are dealing here with the massive 9.2-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Under the skin, the SUV features a petrol burner and a diesel, like the 2.0-liter turbo-petrol with 165 kW, as well as a higher 2.2-liter turbo-diesel, with 131 kW and 400 Nm of torque. Both feature two-wheel and a four-wheel drive layouts.

The 2018 SsangYong Rexton will first arrive in Korea this spring, and will be shortly released on other markets by the end of the year. Stay tuned for more details later on!

SsangYong carmaker is one of those many carmakers which have already previewed some of its new SUVs ahead Paris, and that would be the all-new SsangYong LIV-2 Concept, seen in the pictures below. Unfortunately, for the moment we do not have the official debut photos.

The SsangYong LIV-2 Concept was designed to slot a premium SUV that would tackle its most fearful competitors from BMW or Mercedes-Benz, coming thus with an imposing design, plethora of high-tech gizmos inside and a powerful engine under the hood.

Slotted for 2017, the LIV-2 SUV Concept features premium characteristics inside, including reclining seats with massage function, piano-black gloss accent panels, center fascia with a 9.2-inch monitor, followed by 10-inch monitors in the headrests, wi-fi mirroring for Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto connectivity and much more.

In the engine department, the LIV-2 Concept comes with a 2.2-liter Euro diesel mill, developing 180 horsepower and 420 Nm of torque, thanks as well to a 2,000 bar common rail direct injection system and hooked to a Mercedes-Benz seven-speed automatic transmission. On the petrol`s side, the concept is also using a 2.0-liter GDI turbo engine.

The SUV concept was recently unveiled ahead Paris, the model coming with an evolutionary design style, with borrowings from the LIV-1 concept, revealed in 2013 at Seoul Motor Show.

Aesthetically, the SsangYong LIV-2 SUV comes with standout features, like LED taillights with 3D graphics, wider radiator grille and air intakes and a more rakish headlights. At the rear, the model also comes with integrated diffuser. The new design line is called “Dignified Motion”.

Inside, according to a recent rendering, the cabin is set to come with a fresh look, featuring a wider large infotainment screen, rear bucket, with the whole area being described by the company as “a contemporary luxury interior equipped with a suite of advanced communication technologies.”

In the engine department, the SUV concept comes with a 2.0-liter direct injection petrol, followed by a 2.2-liter turbo-diesel engine. The transmission refers to the same seven-speed Mercedes-Benz automatic , with a freshly new added eight-speed automatic transmission.

The three main directions for having a fuel-conscious car are the improved powertrain, better aerodynamics and a lighter body. Recently, SsangYong’s efforts of building lighter cars have been rewarded at the JEC World Composite Show 2016. The Technology Innovation Award, received by the Koreans, rewarded the tailgate made of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (EFRP) which is an important step forward in decreasing the vehicle’s weight while raising the structural rigidity of the panel.

The award is even more important, since it was received at the largest carbon composite material exhibition in the world. In is an annual event organized in Europe, Asia, and America and this isn’t the first time when they awarded SsangYong. Two years ago, in Asia, the Technology Innovation Award has been also won by SsangYong, for its carbon fiber engine cover.

This year’s winner body-part is a result of the collaboration between Korea Institute of Carbon Convergence Technology (KCTECH) and the Institute of Textile Technology at RWTH Aachen University in Germany, therefore being a Korean – German victory. The tailgate is ten times stronger than a usual steel one and it weighs four times less. That’s because the technology is usually used at the aircrafts construction, a domain where the weight is a crucial factor. We don’t know yet when will SsangYong start to use it, but one thing is sure: they are ready for the game’s next level.

In front of over 200 people, in Seoul, SsangYong officially launched the Tivoli’s upgraded version. They say its improved functionality surpasses by far the competitors’. It can be equipped with 4WD system, for on-road safety, and good off-road capabilities. It maintains the original model’s body lines, with only minor changes: the front grille and the headlamps with LED daytime running lights draw a soaring bird, while the front bumper has a more detailed design. The chassis is made of 71.1 percent high-strength steel and the production process involves pressing the structural body parts at 1500 Mpa. This is twice as normal and it provides a minimal deformation in case of a crash. More, seven airbags, including one for the passenger’s knees are ready to intervene if an accident occurs.

The cabin is particularly spacious and offers cloth or leather-wrapped seats. More, synthetic leather upholstery in red and black combination adds sportiness. There is a new infotainment system, featuring an HDMI input, for playing films on the 7 inch screen. The second row features a great headroom and the possibility of reclining the seats to 32.5 degrees. They are foldable too in 60:40 ratio, leaving a total cargo space of 1.440 liters. In the trunk, a 220V inverter allows the connection of electric devices.

The engine is a 1.6 liter turbo diesel, developing 115 hp and 300Nm of torque between 1.500 and 2.500 rpm. It is coupled to either an Aisin six-speed automatic transmission, or a six-speed mechanical one. Globally, the SsangYong officials hope to increase the Tivoli sales from 63.000 units to over 80.000 units yearly, including a 20.000 sales for the Air version.

SsangYong carmaker will be present at the auto show with the SIV-2 Concept which will lead the way for a future production model with a five-seat cabin. The new model will also share some characteristics with the SIV-1 concept, unveiled three years ago and it is presumed to take on the Nissan Qashqai.

As the carmaker states, the concept-based model will come with “Robust, Speciality, Premium” design and will become one of SsangYong`s flagships.

This means that the concept uses a lightweight architecture and low center of gravity, and will also underpin a state-of-the-art suspension system.

Under the hood, the SsangYong SIV-2 Concept packs a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, hooked to an electric motor and a lithium ion-battery. The hybrid powertrain is said to offer “quiet and efficient driving, reduced CO2 emissions and silent running when idling at slow speeds.”

The production version is believed to arrive in 2018 and would stand above the Tivoli model. The details list is rather scarce at the moment, but there is more to come at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, next month.

SsangYong are known for cheap cars that sport looks only a mother can love. Actually not even a mother. So you could say that this concept intends to fix this minor flaw that has been plaguing the company.

The SsangYong LIV-1 (which stands for Limited Interface Vehicle) will be a premium SUV that aims to improve on aspect. Judging by the released photos, I would say they are on the right track. As far as we can tell, it has LED fog lights, large multi-spoke alloy wheels and a glass roof. The front bumper and the grille seem to be trying a more aggressive look.

SsangYong hasn’t released any performance details so far, but it won’t be a long wait until the 2013 Seoul Motor Show. Still, from concept to production is a long way so you should not hold your breath. What we can say is that they do seem to work towards a better look.
