The MG3 Trophy Championship Concept unveiled at the event is taking its similarities from the MG3 tandard model, coming with an aerodynamic body kit which includes an adjustable rear wing, a revised front splitter and more.

MG3 Trophy Championship Concept

More than that, as seen in the pictures, the MG3 Trophy Championship Concept is also wearing an adjustable coilover suspension system, the limited slip differential or the 17-inch lightweight alloy wheels.

MG3 Trophy Championship Concept

Since there are no details released with the cabin of the MG3 Trophy Championship Concept, we can instead reveal the power that the sportscar is coming with.

MG3 Trophy Championship Concept

We are talking about a 1.5-liter VTi Tech unit, with optimized ECU, billet aluminum pistons, a turbocharger and new camshafts, which make the car develop 207 horsepower and 260 Nm of torque, being a significant optimization from the previous 106 horsepower and 136 Nm of torque.

More details with the MG3 Trophy Championship Concept will be known in the upcoming period, where the model is also said to make its presence at another auto event.

Things have gone a long way since those early times. The guys over at MG haven’t been doing so well by themselves and eventually wound up being bought by the Chinese.

MG Icon Concept

Knowing this, is it such a big surprise to see MG now unveil a fresh concept at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show?

I’d say it’s not, what is a surprise is the rather ambitious name they’ve given it. We’re looking at the MG Icon concept.

Nowhere in the press release was the word halo, top of the line or even flagship. Given the company’s lineup though, a concept like this would be just that.

MG Icon Concept

If they plan to have it sold in the UK however it feels like a bit of a flop. Firstly, there’s that “traditional” Chinese feel of ripoffs from other cars’ detailing.

MG claim that the Icon Concept is meant to hunker back to their glory days of special models such as MGA or MGB GT but I can break it down pretty simply.

We’re looking at woeful Alfa Romeo 4C mutant with the rear end of a Lancia Thesis and which is jacked up in an unprofessional method like the MGB was a long time ago.

MG Icon Concept

SAIC may be able to sell a production model of this in China but I doubt it can cut it anywhere else unless some major changes happen.

The <del datetime="2012-03-10T12:49:27+00:00">Chinese</del> British at MG have done a pretty wise thing in unveiling the 2013 MG5.

That wise thing is not unveiling it now it’s in not unveiling the humble little hatchback at the Geneva Motor Show. It would have certainly been one of the least interesting cars there.

2013 MG5

As much as we can bash it for that reason, we have to admit that the 2013 MG5 isn’t built with any purpose in styling charts.

Price and value for money are key ideas here. This is why the guys over at MG only bothered enough with the design so that it’s not offensive.

There’s no point in spending too much money and time on design when you’re cornering a market that can’t afford to pay for it.

2013 MG5

As is the way with the MG products of late, the original market launch of the 2013 MG5 will take place in China in a few months. The European market will have to wait until late this year for that moment.

At launch the 2013 MG5 presents itself with a 1.8 liter petrol which develops just 105 horsepower. It sounds like a little amount nowadays but there’s no turbocharging, no direct injection or any clever valves and such to pay for either.

The European market is expected to get more options though. An entire petrol range spanning between 1.0 and 1.5 liters will be on offer and, eventually, a diesel will appear as well.

2013 MG5

Predicted outputs for the old continent should be a little better than what’s going on in China. Between 115 and 165 horsepower is where MG is aiming at.

This piece of news is just about the same as we find that the MGB Roadster still has something to say.

Last MGB Roadster retires

Unlike some of the bosses of the automotive industry and some of the racing drivers in certain motorsports, the MGB Roadster will retire.

It has left production over 30 years ago, so what’s it up to now you say?

Well, the last MGB Roadster ever produced is going to its final resting home. It will “live” the death of a pharaoh as it will be cared for by the curators of the Heritage Motor Center in Gaydon, England.

Last MGB Roadster retires

Before that happened, a bit of a special moment in the life of the MGB Roadster came about when the car had to enter its new home.

Since it couldn’t exactly fit through a door, it was shifted sideways and squeezed through one of the enormous windows of the Heritage Motor Center.

The MGB Roadster is going to be re-assembled, never moved again and will, hopefully, never get excitement in its ongoing rest.

Last MGB Roadster retires

It is a little sad to see another driver’s car become a work of art, a mantle piece trophy, but let’s be honest here, the MGB Roadster has had a full life so far.

There’s no point in pushing it beyond all limits with it end up rusting away in a dodgy shed.

If you considered that General Motors’ abbreviation and the very old British brand MG having too much in common within their spelling you’re in for a world of surprise.

MG ZT

After a considerable amount of rumors and such, the British brand, now allied with the Chinese at SAIC have moved forward with a technology deal for the Americans.

In exchange for several GM technologies, including entire platforms, the British will be paying “a king’s ransom” for everything.

In order to bring MG and subsequently Rover up to current standards of the automotive industry, the next generation of the Rover 75 and MG ZT will most likely be using the Epsilon II platform.

MG ZT

That platform is the one used on both European and American continents in the Opel Insignia and Buick Regal, both cars that are of the finest quality.

How MG will exactly benefit from bringing a new car to the market despite it using technologies that GM already has rolling on the streets is quite simple.

Through their SAIC connection they will be selling it in what is the biggest market right now and in the foreseeable future, China.

The Epislon II platform and the goodness of the new generation turbocharged gasoline engines GM has to offer will be powering MG products into a future that isn’t outdated and rusty.

The all new MG is scheduled to go into production as early as 2011 with a launch expected to take place sometime in the same year.

Mind you, when I speak of production, it’s not that simple, as it’s mostly going to be built in China somewhere, followed by a break down, some shipping and then reassembly in Longbridge.

Moving on from stuff like this it’s quite important to know that unlike the MG products that made the car keep selling on the new one will be a four door mid size sedan and will probably be called the MG6.

The new MG6 should firstly be launched as a fastback (think Old school Skoda Octavia rear side) and as progress is made on the assembly line a sedan version should become available.

Sorry to bring back production and company issues but it seems that the Chinese are moving in the right direction, they admit to Shanghai not being able to design a car from scratch yet but are easily persuaded by using the employees they have at MG’s Birmingham office. The engineers and designers over there will provide SAIC with all the know how they lack and they will manage the rest.

Pretty good deal economically but will it actually mean that somebody else besides the Germans can save old British brands?
