Yes, the Lincoln Navigator is big! And without any discussion, it’s one of the most luxurious SUVs on the market. But thanks to the new concept presented at New York Auto Show, it shows its real capabilities.

It features elements that will probably be seen in the next generation’s SUV, being built on the “quiet luxury” concept. It’s a proof that being powerful doesn’t necessary mean to be loud. Ever since it first came in production, in 1997, the Navigator continuously evolved to become a powerful, hugely-spacious, highly-refined SUV. This concept is inspired by the most luxurious yachts and sailboats and that can be seen in all its aspects, from the Storm Blue body color, imitating the sea and sky grades, to the rounded, clean body design. Onboard, the yacht-like features continue, with teak elements and wardrobe management system, containing equipment for a day on the water.
Under the hood, a V6 turbo engine proves that serenity and high performance blends perfectly. It squeezes over 400 hp from a 3.5 liter displacement, guiding this luxurious boat effortlessly over any surface. The sailor – sorry – driver can choose between a few drive modes for a sportier or a more comfortable ride. He can also pick one of the different adjustments of steering response, displayed with animations on the central screen.

To ensure the best possible comfort, the six individual seats offer thirty way adjustments, while the Revel audio system creates a high class atmosphere. The unique feeling of entering the car under the huge gullwing doors, is emphasized by the Lincoln’s specially developed interior lighting scheme. As a proof that nothing was left behind, the safety it’s at high levels, thanks to the Pre-Collision Assist system with Pedestrial Detection, 360 degrees camera for low-speed maneuvers and the lane-keeping system.

In order to reinvent the small crossover worldwide, the US carmaker has managed to attract Matthew McConaughey in a video campaign, set to revive this wonderful car.

2015 Lincoln MKC

We are talking thus about some recent videos with the McConaughey riding the MKC, in the “Live in Your Moment” campaign, launched on September 6th.

Matt VanDyke, the director at Lincoln, explains that in the commercials, the actor is somehow preparing to introduce the wonderful MKC in the luxury market.

“Lincoln MKC is extremely important for our brand. It’s our first-ever small premium utility vehicle and Lincoln’s initial entry into the fastest-growing automotive segment,” VanDyke also added.

More than that, in all three videos, the “Intro”, the “I Just Liked It” and the “Bull”, the cameras are faced towards McConaughey, allowing him to talk directly to the cameras.

The 2015 Lincoln MKC has been already available in the United States for three months now, with the model to be sold in 4,655 units so far.

The new concept is 4,5 meters long and rides a wheelbase of 2,7 meters. The company fitted the new concept with a panoramic roof, large 20-inch aluminum wheels with Pirelli tires and a new front grille.

Lincoln MKC Concept

Inside, Lincoln provides ambient lighting, wood and chrome inserts, a new steering wheel and leather seats.

Lincoln MKC Concept

“The just-introduced MKZ re-establishes Lincoln in the largest luxury segment, and the MKC Concept highlights a key opportunity in the fastest-growing part of the luxury market,” adds the American carmaker.

Lincoln MKC Concept

One of the most important aspects of this new Lincoln MKC Concept is that it foreshadows a future production variant which is expected to enter the range this year. Full information on the new prototype will be released at the upcoming Detroit Motor Show, an event which is just few days away.

Here’s a surprise, sort of, the Ford’s luxury division Lincoln wants to get to work on a new car and before they get at it they want a new platform.

It’s not any platform that they’re asking for, it’s the one that underpins the Ford Mustang pony car. Could they be making a new sports car?

Lincoln MKR Concept

Not really, but if Lincoln gets a stab at that platform, particularly the one Ford is developing for the next-gen Mustang.

The new platform wouldn’t be put to use in a big luxury coupe but rather create an opportunity for Lincoln to get back into the game.

This is where rear wheel drive still matters. Putting properly big power down to the road does still require it to happen.

Lincoln MKR Concept

At the moment, Lincoln do have all wheel drive systems at their disposal but we all know it’s not the same thing. Having one of these RWD platforms opens the door for something else that’s also very special.

It could mean that Lincoln actually has a decent chance at making a proper large luxury sedan in quite some time now.

By the time we find out what’s going on with that segment, we might as well dream of how interesting a RWD, V8 powered Lincoln MKR could be.

Lincoln MKR Concept

That’s the sort of thing Lexus and BMW will have to fear in the US more than anything else. This is of course, if things are worked out inside Ford.

Here’s a preview worth looking more than a decade into the future. It is a 2025 Lincoln Continental and it’s an EV model since, apparently, that’s the way of the future.

What makes this particular future dream of a car special is that the 2025 Lincoln Continental was designed by the people who are likely to work on it in a few years, as right now they are students.

2012 Lincoln Continental EV

Despite the college roots, this new student designed Lincoln Continental has full approval of the mother company of the luxury brand, the Blue Oval that is Ford.

In fact, the guys over at Ford were so pleased with the idea that they’ve commissioned a 1:4 scale model of the Lincoln concept.

This “miniature” model was showcased at the recently ended Detroit Motor Show within the Ford/Lincoln stand of the event.

2012 Lincoln Continental EV

Getting the 2025 Lincoln Continental EV model to happen was a little tricky but not as difficult as this stuff usually is with credit going to the two students that dreamed it up.

They are Colin Bonathan and Jeeho Cha, they attend Lawrence Tech University and, along side engineering and design abilities, they seem to have a firm grasp on presentation.

Otherwise it’s pretty hard to get corporate bosses to approve of such ideas, even if they are as good looking as the 2025 Lincoln Continental EV.

2012 Lincoln Continental EV

Speaking of the look, according to the students, they didn’t finalize it until clearly setting straight issues with the drivetrain, interior accommodations and a few other practical aspects.

That’s a pretty rare thing in the world of concepts or design studies that stretch this far into the future.

Ford’s luxury brand is about to unveil a new concept that shares little more than a name with the previous version of the same car.

I’m talking about the Lincoln MKZ Concept and the company’s plan to unveil it prior to a production version’s launch. The concept will first be seen at the Detroit Motor Show.

Lincoln MKZ

The most important part of the new and upcoming Lincoln MKZ is the stuff you can’t see, the platform and most of the other underpinnings.

Unlike previous versions where the Lincoln MKZ was a big saloon, with a fine interior that was suffering from how underneath, it’s not more than a Ford Fusion.

Lincoln MKZ

In preparation for the 2012 version, Lincoln opted for a much more fitting platform for this sort of big luxury sedan, that of the brilliant to drive Ford Mondeo.

The design will apparently be also updated to a considerable amount, to a point where Lincoln are calling the future MKZ, particularly the concept, a lot more elegant.

Lincoln MKZ

As far as engines are concerned rumor has it that the lineup will include a turbocharged four-cylinder, a hybrid four pot and a V6.

A little niggle about the future Lincoln MKZ could be how it only comes with front wheel drive, with a decent chance for an optional all wheel driven version.

In preparation for next year Lincoln announced a very positive change to their MKT lineup, one that comes from their engine developers.

To begin with, the star component of the 2012 Lincoln MKT is going to be the very popular and very capable 3.5 liter Ecoboost V6.

2011 Lincoln MKT EcoBoost

Weirdly enough, in order to make more attractive, Ford’s luxury division didn’t decide to make it more powerful but just cheapen it down by a considerable amount.

Lincoln reduced the price of the 2012 MKT Ecoboost V6 by 3.000 dollars, a decision which makes the newly developed turbocharged powerplant stand as the same price as the old V6.

The price drop is only available on the all wheel drive version of the 2012 Lincoln MKT V6 EcoBoost and, as a result, Ford reckons the naturally aspirated six cylinder is no longer necessary.

2011 Lincoln MKT EcoBoost

I do agree, although I’m not sure everybody will feel the same about no longer having the 3.7 liter naturally aspirated engine as a choice.

Regardless of partial public opinion, if you were planning to buy a family crossover with up to seven seats that sends the power to all its wheels your choice just got simpler and it gives you better all around performance.

The Ford 3.5 liter Ecoboost engine adds 65 horsepower to the mix, better torque, a much wider power band and almost the same fuel economy figures.

This much hailed version of the 2012 Ecoboost powered Lincoln MKT now costs $46.295 and it delivers 16 mpg city, 23 mpg out on the highway, thus making for a combined cycle return of 18 mpg.

2011 Lincoln MKT EcoBoost

If you want to place yourself at the entry level of the Lincoln MKT lineup you’ll have to get front-wheel drive version that still comes with the naturally aspirated, 270 horsepower 3.7 liter V6 engine.

A brand new one of those with a 2012 model year named Lincoln MKT will set you back $44.300 which is exactly what it would’ve cost you last year.

Apart from this new engine, specification and pricing adaptation Lincoln didn’t really do anything to change the exterior look, interior feel or equipment levels for the 2012 model year.

2011 Lincoln MKT EcoBoost

The only thing you’ll be glad to know still remains is the choice of seating courtesy of a customizable second row of seats. Depending on what you select there, you can comfortably seat six or seven people.

The lack of changes really is becoming apparent and Lincoln should really get some work done to the exterior of the MKT model because to say it’s not a looker is actually quite acceptable.

It seems that Lincoln’s customer base is also on the virge of breaking with tradition in terms of options for the cars they pick.

C.J. O’Donnell, Group Marketing Manager for Lincoln was the guardian of the public appearance of these vital information bits.

It seems like 72 percent of Lincoln MKT buyers, 62 percent of Lincoln MKX buyers, 46 percent of MKS and some 25 percent of MKZ owners all of them chose all wheel drive.

2010 Lincoln MKS

I know it doesn’t really appeal to everybody as a necessary option, especially when you don’t have an off-road vehicle, four wheel drive is clearly something to appreciate on a heavy luxury car.

Also something surprising for those who know the Lincoln Navigators of old, is that this model is now being sold with all its wheels driven in a greater percentage than ever before.

2011 saw Lincoln Navigator owners go for four wheel drive on 62 percent of their orders so far.

2011 Lincoln MKZ

Sure, the representatives at Ford would love to tell you just how much the technology has evolved lately in their hands but you can’t help but feel how much of an influence the change in customer preferences had.
