Over the years, talk about autonomous vehicles have intensified, and in recent months we have seen several tangible advances towards this becoming not just possible, but also feasible.
And while we saw plenty concepts for personal vehicles, now we also get to see what the future of trucking means for Mercedes-Benz.
A while ago, they presented a concept for a Future Truck, that is riddled with technology and is virtually autonomous. Said concept was recently tested in realistic traffic situations, and it works rather well. Besides the functionality, the new truck also looks amazing, and if this is truly the future of the Mercedes trucks, I like it.
Inside the cabin, the Mercedes-Benz concept truck has a very clean design, with the many different buttons gone. All the controls have been moved to a removable tablet. When you engage autonomous mode, you can recline the seat, turn it to 45 degrees and simply use the tablet to keep an eye on things.
Autonomy of the truck was achieved by Mercedes-Benz by using a combination of radar technology and cameras. In fact, the whole system seems quite similar to what aircraft are using for autopilot.
